The harvest of olives in Valdichiana Senese has begun: falling quantity, but excellent quality

Harvesting of olives, as well as their pressing in all olive oil mills, has started for a few days. Even Valdichiana, unfortunately, had to deal with a noticeable drop in the quantity of olives harvested, caused by summer drought. High temperatures, however, have completely eradicated the olive fruit fly, as highlighted by Giampiero Cresti, executive director of Olivicoltori Toscani Associati [Tuscan Association of Olive Growers], namely the cooperative, which has been devoted itself for years to investigating and disseminating the knowledge of Tuscan Extra Virgin Olive Oil PGI: “Olives are healthy, but few. The hot weather and low humidity did not allow the olive fruit fly to attack the fruits, however they created problems during the florescence phase. Luckily, the trees have held up well, thanks to the late summer rains. The harvest, at the moment, ranks at around 12-13%, which is a pretty good result. In this first phase, oil tends to highlight bitter notes in the mouth, which suggests good antioxidant qualities for the product. We are convinced that it will be a great year. ”

As the mills start working full-time, the municipalities of Valdichiana Senese feature numerous events dedicated to tasting the new oil. Thanks to Oliving, namely the official calendar of initiatives dedicated to the extra virgin olive oil, created by the Strada del Vino Nobile di Montepulciano e dei Sapori della Valdichiana Senese, finding one’s way amongst the many initiatives will be easier and more convenient, since up to November the calendar, constantly updated, will be available on the websites www.valdichianaliving.it and www.stradavinonobile.it. As early as the next weekend (October 28-29), Valdichiana Senese offers a rich menu of events. It will start on Saturday, October 28, in Cetona with “Sul filo dell’olio“: from 9am to 8pm, there will be a show market of organic products and quality handicrafts, tasting of new oil in the cellars of the town, and workshops for children. On Sunday, October 29, the new oil will be the absolute protagonist of the initiatives on the territory included in the billboard of the “Camminata tra gli Olivi“, the national event organized by the Association of the Olive Oil Cities, whos program will include trekking in the countryside and tasting of bruschetta and typical products in Chiusi, Montepulciano and Sinalunga. Finally, in Sarteano preparations are being made for “Il Tempo dell’Olio – Giornata dell’Olio e della Bruschetta“: a walk through olive trees, tasting of bruschetta topped with “Etruscan Olive Oil”, and workshops for children.
