The Pietraporciana Farm was once part of the large estate “La Foce”, owned by the Marquis Origo. In 1985, Marchioness Iris Origo donated the farm to the town of Chianciano. Since 1996, the area where the structure is located (within the municipality of Sarteano) has become part of the Natural Reserve System. This site is of great importance both from the historical-cultural and naturalistic point of view. Located on the ridge that separates Val di Chiana from Val d’Orcia, it has been inhabited since ancient times, as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds dating back to the Bronze Age, up to the Roman era. Along the trails of the reserve, you can admire several natural caves, among which that “of caterpillar”, located in the highest part of the Reserve, stands out for importance. Since 2012, the trekking hostel and the visitor center of the Reserve Pietraporciana has been managed by the cooperative society “Abies Alba”. The skills acquired over the years are aimed at different types of users: groups, associations, primary and secondary schools, universities. Many are the initiatives proposed during the summer months, such as summer camps, thematic events and residential courses using qualified professionals. Specifically, the cooperative aims at promoting and disseminating environmental sustainability, to highlight the territory and the richness of the nature reserve (as an area of scientific interest and natural) through courses or activities, with the help of professional and skilled workers.
