VINO NOBILE AND THE OTHER WINES
The true and correct symbol of Montepulciano, Vino Nobile is today one of the most prestigious wines in the world, and represents, with tourism and that associated with it, the maximum source of production not only in the municipality but in all the surrounding territory.
Five million bottles are produced by sixty-five wineries whose bottling guarantee its prestige, also it is recognized by the numerous awards it has received over the years. The first appellation (that as being recognized as a D.O.C.) dates back to the 12th July, 1966; then followed, with the 1980 vintage, when Vino Nobile obtained the recognition of the Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita: it was the first wine to be marketed with this label, that is considered the maximum classification provided for by Italian law. A decree of the 26th July, 1999 finally created the last modification.
Why is it Noble “Vino Nobile”?
There are those that date its nobility back to the XVIII century when with the term noble meant a wine of superior quality adapted to the aristocracy that could afford to pay a higher price. But there is those that maintain that the term comes from the fact that many nobles in the area produced it.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG – Recognized as a DOCG: from 1980
Grapes: angiovese ( prugnolo gentile) minimum 70%, canaiolo nero up to 20%. There can be present up to a maximum of 20% grapes registered and/or authorized for the province of Siena
Aging: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano is submitted to a period of aging of almost 2 years starting from the January following the grape harvest, leaving each producer to choose the following options
A) 24 months of aging in wood
B) 18 months minimum of aging in wood with the remaining months in other containers
C) 12 months minimum in wood plus 6 months minimum in bottle, plus the remaining months other in other containers
Reserve: Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Riserva is submitted to a period of aging of at least 3 years with 6 months refining in the bottle
Rosso di Montepulciano DOC – Recognized as a DOC: 1988
Grapes: sangiovese ( prugnolo gentile) minimum 70%, canaiolo nero up to 20%. There can be present up to a maximum of 20% grapes registered and/or authorized for the province of Siena
Refining: Rosso di Montepulciano cannot be put on sale before the 1st March of the year following the harvest (bar some exceptions).
Vin Santo di Montepulciano DOC – Recognized as a DOC: 1996
Vinsanto di Montepulciano and Vinsanto di Montepulciano Riserve
Grapes: Malvasia bianca, Grechetto bianco (called pulcinculo), Trebbiano toscano alone or a minimum mix of 70%. There can be added other white grapes up to a maximum of 30%, provided that they are registered and authorized in the province of Siena.
Vinsanto di Montepulciano Occhio di Pernice
Grapes: angiovese ((prugnolo gentile) minimum 50% and other grapes registered and/or authorized for the province of Siena.
Aging: follows the traditional method of aging as set down by the rules provided for the drying of the grapes, the conservation and the aging that must happened in wood containers with a capacity not greater than 300lt. for the“ Vinsanto di Montepulciano”, in caratelli with a capacity of 125lt for the Vinsanto di Montepulciano Riserva and in caratelli with a capacity of not superior to 75lt for the Vinsanto di Montepulciano Occhio di Pernice. The minimum period of aging is set respectively at 3 years, 5 years and 8 years.
