AREAS OF PRODUCTION
The production area is that of the municipality of Montepulciano, except the lower part of the Val di Chiana. The soil is originally Pliocene and at an altitude between 250 and 600 metres above sea level. The territory with the specific vocation of winegrowing reduced to a small area in which the climatic and geographic characteristics give quality to the wine that it produces. The rainfall is around an annual average of 740mm and the temperature at 14°C – together determine the damp climate that is very near to sub-arid conditions (arid index=22). The composition of the soil is mainly sand and sandy-clay and little cement like with intercalation of small sized pebbles and with the presence of fossils from below the average Pliocene. The exposure of the vineyards is mainly to the east. The best soils are those found in the areas of Caggiole, Sanguineto, Gracciano and Cervognano where the clay is mixed together with sand. The wines produced are almost all suitable for long aging. The vineyard surface is 670 hectares with a production of 27,000 hectolitres of wine suitable to become Nobile.
