The Montepulciano LIPU Oasis represents the most interesting naturalistic parts of the lake of the same name, a real and true jewel set in the splendid scenery of the Sienese countryside. Derived from a lake basin this is not very deep, and bordered by a splendid humid area that above all comprises the most vast surface of reeds in central Italy. Its wide dimension allow the presence of a noteworthy quantity of inhabitants, of both plants and animals, comprising of many species in particular interesting from an environmental point of view. As well there is the presences of important species birds on an international level, the area has been recognized as an IBA site (Important Bird Area). The autumn and winter without doubt, are the periods in which the lake waters are populated by many varieties; in fact principally arriving from northern and eastern Europe in large numbers are ducks, black tabaccata, canapiglia, and swamp falcon. Among one of the species present all year round at Lake Montepulciano, has been sighted the great-crested grebe, an elegant bird present in the Reserve with over 50 nesting couples.
